A practical guide for buyers

Gemstone Education

Understand the language used to describe natural Ceylon sapphires and coloured gemstones—clearly, simply and without sales pressure.

This guide is general education. A gemstone should be assessed on its own characteristics and, where appropriate, its laboratory report.

Colour language

Understanding Ceylon Sapphire Color

Sapphire colour is easier to understand when you separate three ideas: hue, tone and saturation. They work together, and lighting, cut and the screen used to view an image can change the appearance.

Hue
The basic colour family you see—blue, for example, with possible violet or green modifiers.
Tone
How light or dark the colour appears, from pale through medium to deep.
Saturation
The strength or intensity of the colour, from muted or greyish to strong and vivid.

Light tone

A paler blue appearance. Light does not automatically mean weak colour or low quality.

Medium tone

A balanced depth of blue that can show colour while still returning plenty of light.

Dark tone

A deeper appearance. If too dark, some areas may look black or lose visible colour.

Vivid blue

Usually describes strong, lively saturation with good brightness—not a tone category by itself.

Royal blue

A trade description often used for a rich, deeper saturated blue. Usage can vary between sellers and laboratories.

02

Treatment disclosure

Heated vs Unheated Sapphire

Heat treatment is controlled heating applied to some natural sapphires to improve or alter colour, clarity, or both. It is widely encountered in the gemstone trade and should always be disclosed clearly.

Heated

Natural stone, with heat treatment

“Heated” does not mean synthetic. It means the natural gemstone has undergone a heating process and should be sold with that treatment stated.

Unheated

No heat indications reported

Laboratory wording commonly reflects that no evidence of heating was detected during examination. Read the exact wording and scope of the report.

03

Independent information

How to Read a Gemstone Certificate

A gemstone report records the laboratory's findings for the submitted stone. First check that the report details match the gemstone and the seller's listing.

Gemstone type
Confirms the material identified, such as natural corundum (sapphire).
Weight
The gemstone's carat weight at the time it was tested.
Measurements
Length × width × depth in millimetres, usually with the shape or cutting style.
Origin
A laboratory opinion on geographic origin when tested, requested and determinable.
Treatment
States detected treatment, no indications of a tested treatment, or the report's applicable wording.
Lab name
Identifies the laboratory responsible for examining and issuing the report.
Report number
A unique reference to compare with the document and verify through the laboratory when that service is available.

A report is not a price guarantee or appraisal unless it specifically says so. Report formats, terminology and the tests offered vary by laboratory.

04

Geographic origin

Sapphire Origin

“Ceylon” is the traditional trade name used for Sri Lanka. A sapphire described as Ceylon or Sri Lankan origin is represented as having been mined in Sri Lanka; it does not describe one single colour, quality or value level.

When origin matters

Origin determination should be supported by a qualified gemological laboratory where applicable. Laboratories compare observed features and analytical data with reference material, then state an opinion when the evidence supports one. A seller's location or statement alone is not the same as an independent laboratory origin opinion.

05

Appearance & proportion

Cut, Clarity and Dimensions

Cut quality

Facet placement, symmetry and polish influence brightness, colour distribution and the shape seen face-up.

Windowing

A pale, see-through area—often near the centre—where light passes through rather than returning to the viewer.

Extinction

Very dark areas that return little visible light. Some darkness may appear with movement, but excessive extinction can hide colour.

Inclusions & clarity

Internal features can support natural identity, affect transparency or raise durability questions. Their importance depends on type, position and visibility.

Proportions

The relationship between width and depth affects face-up size, light return, colour concentration and setting options.

Measurements

Length × width × depth in millimetres shows physical size. Two sapphires of equal carat weight can face up differently because their proportions differ.

Before you purchase

A Buyer's Checklist Before Purchasing a Sapphire

Use the questions below to compare stones and confirm the transaction details before sending payment.

  • 01
    Natural or synthetic

Does the report clearly identify a natural gemstone rather than a laboratory-grown material?

  • 02
    Treatment disclosure

Is heating or any other detected treatment stated in plain language?

  • 03
    Certificate

Is there a report from a qualified gemological laboratory when independent verification is important?

  • 04
    Origin

Is the stated origin supported by the report where origin affects your decision?

  • 05
    Colour

Have you reviewed colour in neutral lighting and more than one video or photograph?

  • 06
    Clarity

Are the visible inclusions and any durability concerns shown and explained?

  • 07
    Cut

Does the stone return light well, without excessive windowing or extinction?

  • 08
    Dimensions

Do the millimetre measurements suit the intended jewellery design and face-up size?

  • 09
    Seller information

Can you verify the seller, invoice details and direct contact information before payment?

  • 10
    Insured shipping

Are declared value, tracking, insurance coverage and delivery procedure confirmed?

  • 11
